Nikolaus Holler started to learn the recorder from his mother in the age of four. He is playing gigs since he is 14. Nikolaus was on the road with Reggae-, Skapunk-, Soul-, Funk- and Pop-bands as well as with Blues-, Jazz-, Contemporary-combos and with Big Bands. Concerts brought him to Europe, Asia, South-America and Africa.
In 2015 he did his first international tour with an own contemporary jazz quartet (Marthinik’s Garden), which included intimate as well as bigger concerts/festivals and a radio appearance on Rádio Universitária FM de Natal / Brasil. Apart from that the quartet gave a workshop on “contemporary jazz“ at the university of Natal (UFRN).
In the same year he firstly played in Asia (Bodrum, Turkey).
Nikolaus Holler was also working in the Austrian commercial music business, with placing a few songs in the national “TOP 40 Charts“, with the band „Solarkreis“. For his engagement in the jazz business he got invited to the radio program „Jazz at it’s best“ done by the main Austrian radio „ORF“ („Steiermark“ channel).
Since 2016 Nikolaus is endorsing “Schagerl“ soprano saxophones and teaching woodwinds and an ensemble in a music school. In the same year Nikolaus joined the Concept Big Band, the Riverside Big Band (both leadalto) and the Jatobá Big Band (on barisax and bassclarinet), which recorded a debut album in 2017. In 2017 he joined Downbeat Award Winner Claudia Döffinger’s fresh project “Elinor“ on bassclarinet and tenor, as well as an European Student All Star formation, playing and working at the “Jaffa Jazz Festival“ in Tel Aviv, Israel with the renowned drummer Billy Cobham.
After graduating in Jazz saxophone (with his project Niklouds Brotherhood) from Kunstuniversität Graz, where one of his main events was to play lead alto in the faculty Big Band feat. the legendary Sheila Jordan and Charlie Miklin, he decided to move to Vienna to study a master’s degree in jazz saxophone with the renowned musician Andy Middleton.
By the end of 2018 he played his first Africa Tour with Elinor. The contemporary chamber-jazz collective, which just released a video production played concerts and workshops in Ethiopia and Eritrea as well as a tour through Germany, Switzerland and Austria in 2019. Another release which is planned for 2019 will be an album by a large ensemble called “Moped Loewen Jazz Rock Orchestra”, in which Nikolaus plays the baritone saxophone and the flute. In the same year he was invited as a studio guest to the Slovenian/Austrian “Radio Agora”.
